Packing List
Everything a household needs to leave the house calmly: a timeline, a checklist by category, and the home-preparation steps most families remember at the airport.

A Four-Week Countdown
4 weeks before
- Check every passport expiry date — many countries require six months validity
- Book travel insurance and save the policy number somewhere the whole family can reach
- Arrange pet care, plant watering and a key holder
- Refill prescriptions so you leave with more days than the trip lasts
- Confirm school or work absences and add them to the shared calendar
2 weeks before
- Check the forecast for your destination and build the clothing list around it
- Order anything missing: swimwear that still fits, adapters, sunscreen
- Download offline maps, boarding passes, films and kids' shows
- Notify your bank of travel dates and set a holiday spending limit
- Print or save copies of tickets, reservations and emergency contacts
2 days before
- Pack bags per person and weigh them
- Charge every device and pack the cables together in one pouch
- Prepare the day-of bag: snacks, water, medication, wipes, spare clothes
- Empty the fridge of anything perishable
- Do a final walk-through of the home checklist below
The checklist
Packing List by Category
Work through one category at a time, per person. Print it, or let HUIS OS keep it as a living list your whole household can tick off together.
Documents and money
The category that ends a trip before it starts.
- Passports, ID cards, visas
- Boarding passes and booking confirmations
- Travel and health insurance details
- Driving licence and car hire voucher
- Two payment cards, stored separately
- Some local cash for arrival
- Emergency contact card for each child
Clothing per person
Count nights, not days, and plan one laundry cycle for trips over a week.
- Outfits per night plus two spares
- Underwear and socks with extra for kids
- One warm layer, even in summer
- Rain jacket or compact umbrella
- Swimwear and a quick-dry towel
- Comfortable walking shoes already broken in
- One outfit for a nicer evening
Health and toiletries
Split across bags so one lost suitcase is not a crisis.
- Prescription medication in original packaging
- Pain relief for adults and children
- Motion sickness, antihistamine, rehydration sachets
- Plasters, antiseptic, tweezers, thermometer
- Sunscreen and after-sun
- Toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo
- Insect repellent for the destination
Children and babies
The list that changes every single year as they grow.
- Comfort toy or blanket — pack it last, unpack it first
- Nappies, wipes and a changing mat for the journey
- Formula, bottles, sterilising bags
- Car seat or travel booster
- Pram or carrier suited to the terrain
- Snacks that survive a delay
- Headphones sized for small heads
Tech and entertainment
One pouch, packed together, so nothing is left in a hotel socket.
- Phone, tablet and laptop chargers
- Travel adapters for the destination
- Power bank (in hand luggage)
- Headphones per person
- Camera, spare battery, memory card
- Downloaded films, playlists and offline maps
- Books, cards or a compact travel game
The home you leave behind
Most forgotten, most expensive to get wrong.
- Set the thermostat to holiday mode
- Pause post, deliveries and subscription boxes
- Turn off the water at the main stop tap if you'll be away over a week
- Empty bins and run the dishwasher
- Set a couple of lights on timers
- Lock windows, doors and the garage; arm the alarm
- Leave a key and your itinerary with someone you trust
Why lists fail
A Checklist You Rebuild Every Trip Isn't a System
Legacy family organizers give you an empty list and let you type. That works once. Then the children grow, the destination changes, and you start again from scratch — usually the night before, usually forgetting the same three things.
HUIS OS treats travel as part of the household, not a separate app. The list is built from what it already knows about your family, your home, and your last trip.
It already knows your family
Ages, sizes, allergies and medication live in Household Memory, so the list arrives personalised instead of generic.
It remembers the last trip
What you packed, what you never used, what you had to buy on arrival. Next trip starts from experience, not a blank page.
It prepares the house too
Thermostat, deliveries, pet care and bin day become tasks assigned to the right person before you leave.
It watches the dates
Passport expiring within six months of travel? HUIS OS flags it in the Daily Brief weeks before it becomes a problem.
Questions
Family Travel Planning, Answered
When should a family start packing for vacation?
Paperwork four weeks out, the list two weeks out, the bags two days before — that gap is what lets you replace anything missing without panic.
What do families forget most often?
Chargers and adapters, enough prescription medication, insurance details, comfort items for small children, and the home itself: deliveries, thermostat, bins.
How do you reuse a list next time?
Keep it attached to the household rather than the trip. HUIS OS stores what was packed, what went unused, and suggests the next list for the season and destination.
